The rebuilt ground on the same patch of high road holds 62,850 and opened in April 2019, replacing the old White Hart Lane a few hundred yards away. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium sits on the site the club has occupied since its earliest years in this corner of north London, and the move gave Spurs a stand-alone arena built for the Premier League era rather than a century of patchwork terraces.

The club started life in 1882 as simply Hotspur, formed in Tottenham, and only became Tottenham Hotspur two years later, once letters kept arriving addressed to another London side with a similar name. The crest still carries the reference: a cockerel standing on a football, spurs on its legs, a nod to Henry Percy — Harry Hotspur — whose name the club borrowed. Underneath runs the motto Audere est Facere, to dare is to do.

White shirts and navy shorts have been the home kit since the 1890s, adopted in imitation of Preston North End, the first side to go through an English league season unbeaten, who also played in white. That choice earned Spurs their own nickname, the Lilywhites, alongside the shorter Spurs used everywhere else.

Two league titles, both from an era when Tottenham could still call itself a genuine force at the top of the English game, sit alongside eight FA Cups won across nine decades, the last of them in 1991. The League Cup has come round four times, most recently in 1993.

None of it carries the weight, on the day, of the fixture against Arsenal. The North London derby is the one result the ground remembers longest, home or away, whatever else the season has done.
