VfB Lubeck

Dieter Hecking was not yet the manager of Borussia Mönchengladbach when he arrived at the Stadion an der Lohmühle in Lübeck. In the 2001/02 season, he took charge of a club that had been founded as Ballsportverein Vorwärts Lübeck nearly eighty years earlier. Under his leadership, VfB Lübeck reached the 2. Bundesliga, a step that would define the club’s modern identity more than any local title.

That ascent was followed by a run in the DFB-Pokal that many still recall. As a second-division side, they cut through Eintracht Rheine, FC St. Pauli, and SC Freiburg before falling to Werder Bremen in the semi-finals. It remains their greatest achievement in national competition. The rivalry with 1. FC Phönix Lübeck is one of the oldest in northern Germany, contested in a city that has seen its own history rewritten more than once.

The ground itself has shifted. Renovations completed in 2023 and 2024 reduced the capacity to 10,434, a change that reflected both safety standards and a desire to keep the stadium intimate. They have won the Regionalliga Nord twice in the top tier of that league, in 1995 and 2002, and again under the fourth-division structure in 2020 and 2023.

Players like Tobias Schweinsteiger, who scored eighteen goals in forty-six appearances between 2004 and 2008, brought attention to the squad, but the club has also relied on long-serving figures such as Daniel Bärwolf and Ibrahim Türkmen. Today, VfB Lübeck competes in the 3. Liga and enters the DFB Pokal each season, seeking another chance to play beyond their city borders.
