The CSA 4-Day Series Division 2 operates as the second tier of South African first-class cricket. This competition serves as the immediate predecessor to the 2026–27 "1st Class Shield." It traces its lineage back to the Currie Cup, which was founded in 1889–90 by Sir Donald Currie, a shipping magnate who donated the original trophy. Before adopting its current name, the second tier was known as the Castle Bowl. The two-division structure was introduced in the 2021–22 season.
The league features provincial teams such as Border, Easterns, Knights, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Northern Cape. Matches are played over four days in a round-robin format. The top two sides from the league phase advance to a final. The winner of this final gains promotion to the top flight. Simultaneously, the lowest-ranked side from Division 1 suffers relegation. This automatic exchange mechanism started in the 2023–24 season after a two-year transition period.
Knights claimed the title in 2025–26 by defeating Easterns. Border won the previous year in 2023–24, while Limpopo secured victory in 2022–23. A shared championship occurred in 2024–25 between KwaZulu-Natal Inland and Northern Cape. The competition functions primarily as a developmental tier for provincial squads. In the upcoming rebranding, the top tier becomes the "1st Class Series" played in four-day matches, whereas this division shifts to a three-day format under the shield name.
