About
PLT Tier A is the premier first-class domestic cricket competition in Sri Lanka, administered by Sri Lanka Cricket. It sits at the apex of the national domestic pyramid for the sport. The tournament was established in the 1937–38 season as the Daily News Trophy, named after the Lake House Newspapers. It was not granted official first-class status by the International Cricket Council until the 1988–89 season.
The competition has undergone numerous name changes reflecting sponsorships and memorials over the decades. It was known as the P. Saravanamuttu Trophy from 1950 to 1976, followed by the Robert Senanayake Trophy and the Lakspray Trophy. Later iterations included the Premier Trophy and the Premier League Tournament before the 2022 rebranding to the Major League Tournament. In 2015, the format was restructured into a league system with Tier A and Tier B divisions; Tier A comprised the top clubs. The format typically involves 14 teams divided into two groups, with the top teams advancing to a 'Super Eight' knockout stage and the remainder playing in a 'Plate' tournament.
Promotion and relegation exist between the tiers, with the Tier B winner promoted and the bottom Tier A team relegated. Singhalese Sports Club is the most successful team with 32 titles. Notable records include Dinesh Chandimal's unbeaten 354 and Malinda Pushpakumara's ten-wicket haul in an innings. This tournament is distinct from Sri Lanka's List A and T20 formats, serving as the primary test of multi-day cricket for the country's clubs.
