The team defeated Queensland to claim the most recent title in the 2024–25 season. The competition was established by Cricket Australia for the 1996–97 season. It replaced the Australian Women's Cricket Championships, which operated in a limited carnival format since the 1930s. The field of participants expanded from five to seven teams over time, with the addition of the ACT Meteors in 2009–10 and the Tasmania Tigers in 2010–11. The event typically runs from September to March, often pausing during November and December to allow players to take part in the Twenty20 Women's Big Bash League. The tournament remains consistently known by its official abbreviation and has not undergone a major title sponsorship change to its name.
