Mosfellsbær sits just north of Reykjavík, and the sports club there has never confined itself to one field. Ungmennafélagið Afturelding, formed on 11 April 1909, still runs teams across football, volleyball and handball.

The men's football team has never lifted a national trophy, but it has spent much of its history moving between divisions. After a decade in the second tier, Afturelding won 2. deild in 2018 and returned to the first division. The stay lasted one season: a 12th-place finish in 2025 sent the club back down to the first division.

Other sections of the club have filled the trophy cabinet football has not. The men's volleyball team won the Icelandic Cup in 2017, the women's side took three championships between 2012 and 2016, and the handball team won the title in 1999. The women's team, which competed jointly with Fram in 2017 and 2018, produced goalkeeper Cecilía Rán Rúnarsdóttir .
