The Premier League stands as the highest level of domestic football in Mongolia, operating under the authority of the Mongolian Football Federation (MFF). Established in 1955, the competition has long defined the national game, sitting at Level 1 of the pyramid beneath the Mongolian First League.
A distinct feature of the schedule is its alignment with the summer months, running from April to October. This structure accommodates the harsh continental climate and allows for the use of artificial turf, necessitated by permafrost conditions. The format requires each club to play a triple round-robin, completing 27 matches in a campaign. This ensures a rigorous test of endurance over the season.
Competition for places involves promotion and relegation, with the bottom two sides dropping to the First League while one or two teams ascend from it. The league has historically drawn clubs from the capital, Ulaanbaatar, creating a dense concentration of footballing talent in one region. Rules governing squad composition allow for six foreign players per team, a limit that rises to ten for clubs participating in Asian competitions.
Success within the league is measured by title wins. Khaan Khuns-Erchim FC holds the record for the most victories, having claimed the championship thirteen times. The current holders of the title are FC Ulaanbaatar, who secured the crown in the 2025–26 campaign. The league also serves as a pathway for players to reach continental football, with top finishers earning qualification for the AFC Challenge League. This distinction sets the competition apart from its regional peers, offering a route to international play that extends beyond national borders.
