Li Nari had already left her mark before most fans outside Khovd Province knew the name: in 2025 she scored the club's first-ever goal in the AFC Women's Champions League. Khovd Western fields both a men's and a women's team out of Khovd, the capital of Khovd Province, though matches for both are played at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar — the arrangement most provincial clubs in the Mongolian Premier League live with.

The club was founded in 2015, and the 2021 Mongolian First League title brought promotion for the 2022 season. Goalkeeper B. Bumbayar was named the First League's best in the position for the men's squad in 2025–26. The women's team has had the sharper run of late. Their 2024 Mongolian Women's League title was a first championship since they returned to the competition that year, and the squad took three of the four major individual awards on offer.

Not everything has gone the club's way. N. Namuuna, who joined in 2024, was banned in 2025 over an attempt to fix a match.
