Motherwell took all three points at Hibernian Park on Saturday, winning 2-1 in the opening round of the Premiership season. The visitors started brightly, taking the lead through a penalty before Hibernian fought back to level matters. A second spot-kick brought Hibernian level, but a late goal from Ibrahim Said proved decisive in the end.
Lucas Fadinger gave Motherwell the advantage in the fortieth minute, converting from the spot after Hibernian were penalised. The hosts responded well, and Martin Boyle equalised just six minutes after the restart, also from a penalty. By then the match had settled into a rhythm, with both sides trading possession without creating anything too clear-cut.
There were five substitutions in total, though none dramatically altered the flow of the game. Hibernian brought on Aaron Mayor in the sixtieth minute, while Motherwell introduced Jake Girdwood-Reich shortly after. The visitors added Regan Charles-Cook for their second change in the seventy-fifth minute, and Hibernian replied with Michael Boyle off the bench three minutes later.
And here's the thing about the statistics — Hibernian dominated possession and created more chances, but Motherwell were far more clinical. The hosts registered seventy-three attacks compared to fifty-two, and fired eleven shots on target against five for the visitors. Yet the shot accuracy tells a different story entirely, with Motherwell converting 56 per cent of their efforts on target while Hibernian managed just 32 per cent.
The result leaves Hibernian eighth in the table with six points from five games, two wins and three defeats. Motherwell sit fifth with eight points, having drawn twice and lost once. A fourth straight win would have been nice for the visitors, but this away victory keeps them in touch with the automatic promotion places for now.
