Gonzalo Escobar

Gonzalo Escobar took the long route into professional football, working through Banfield's academy for nearly a decade before settling into the first team at Temperley in 2016. The move that shaped his career, though, came later: after two seasons in Colón's back line, where he helped the club lift the Copa de la Liga Profesional in 2021, he left Argentina altogether for UD Ibiza, trading the familiarity of home for Spanish second-tier football.

That switch opened the door to South America's other football culture. A free transfer to Fortaleza in 2023 put him in Brazil, and within a year the move paid off in an unusual way: instead of staying in Ceará, he was sent to Santos on loan as part of a swap deal that sent Felipe Jonatan the other way. It is the kind of transfer that says more about a player's value than any single match report — two clubs willing to trade rather than simply buy.

At Santos, Escobar found solid ground. He was part of the squad that won the Brazilian Serie B title in 2024, securing the club's return to the top flight, and the loan was converted into a permanent deal in 2025. His form since then earned him a place in the Campeonato Paulista team of the year, recognition for a left-back who had arrived as makeweight in a swap and stayed on merit.

He has never been capped by Argentina, and his career has produced a single goal in senior football, scored during his spell in Ibiza. What stands out instead is the trajectory itself: a defender who moved continents twice in three years and, each time, made himself hard to leave out of the side.
