Accra Lions

The Lions were only formed on 12 December 2015, and the club spent its first years grinding through the lower tiers before the 2020–21 Division One League Zone III title finally opened the door to the Ghana Premier League.

Once there, the club moved fast. The 2023–24 season produced a runners-up finish behind the youngest squad the league had seen, assembled under manager James Francis and built on graduates the club had already been selling abroad — Osman Bukari left for AS Trenčín in 2018 and worked his way through KAA Gent to Red Star Belgrade, a pipeline that later carried Rauf Salifu to Sporting Kansas City II and David Oduro to FC Barcelona Atlètic. That promise made the runners-up finish sting more when it unravelled: a 15th-place finish in 2024–25 sent the Lions back down to Division One, a season also disrupted by renovation work that pushed home games away from the Accra Sports Stadium and into the smaller University of Ghana Stadium.

The club's finances tell their own story of ambition outrunning the table. In May 2023, Lothar Matthäus bought a major stake alongside President Oliver König and Frank Acheampong, a deal that valued the Lions at roughly €2 million and put a World Cup winner's name behind a club not yet a decade old. Ibrahim Tanko has overseen football matters as sporting director through the swing from promotion to near-title to relegation, the kind of volatility a club still finding its level learns to absorb rather than explain.
