Atletico PE U20

Limoeiro sits in Pernambuco's Zona da Mata Norte, sugar-cane country north of Recife, and for most of its history the club that now carries the region's colours did not belong to the town at all. It started life in 2006 in Vicência as Clube Atlético de Vicência, moved to Carpina two years later and took the name Clube Atlético Pernambucano, drifted briefly to Camaragibe in 2011, then came back. Only later did Limoeiro become its base, the administrative office and training ground settling in the Gameleira district while the first team took up residence at the Estádio José Vareda.

Before that, home was the Paulo Petribú ground in Carpina, a 3,500-seat stadium that saw the club's one real run at the top flight. Finishing runner-up in the Campeonato Pernambucano Série A2 in 2014 sent Atlético-PE into the Série A1 for the first time, and the club held its own there for two seasons — seventh in 2016, enough to reach the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D the following year — before finishing bottom in 2017 and going back down. That Série D campaign ended at the first hurdle, third in its group.

The nicknames tell their own story of identity: Laranja Mecânica, the Mechanical Orange, for the shirt, and Tatu-Bola, after the three-banded armadillo that rolls itself into a ball when threatened — an animal native to this stretch of the Brazilian interior and the club's mascot. The youth side has never gone further than a semi-final at the Campeonato Pernambucano Sub-20, reaching third place in 2015, and in 2010 travelled to the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior, where it went out in the group stage at Limeira.

Locally, none of that history counts for as much as the fixtures against Carpinense, Carpina Sport Club and Centro Limoeirense — three clubs drawn from the same small stretch of the Zona da Mata Norte, where a derby needs no trophy on the line to matter.
