Retrô FC Brasil U20

When Charles left Camaragibe on loan to Flamengo's under-17 side, it was treated inside the club less as a transfer than as proof of concept: Retrô had set out to fill 70 percent of its professional squad from its own academy, built around a tiki-taka style borrowed and adapted through a methodology exchange with Palmeiras. The academy itself sits inside a R$35 million training centre in Camaragibe, complete with its own hotel and medical wing, paid for by Laércio Guerra, the Unibra university-group owner who had started the whole operation in 2016 as a youth football project rather than a club chasing promotion.

The under-20 side has done its share of proving. It won the Campeonato Pernambucano Sub-20 in 2023 and, the following year, reached the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil Sub-20 — a stage few academies in the state have reached at all. Younger age groups have carried the same pattern: state titles at Sub-15 in 2020, 2022 and 2023, at Sub-13 in 2021 and 2024, and a Copa Pernambuco Sub-17 in 2024 followed by the Sub-17 state championship in 2025.

Where the age-group titles have piled up, the senior side has had to wait longer, breaking through with the Campeonato Brasileiro Série D in 2024 after two runner-up finishes in the state's top flight, both lost to the old Pernambuco establishment — Náutico in 2022, Sport in 2023. Náutico remains the fixture that matters most, the closest thing Retrô has to an old rival despite the club's youth.

Senior matches are played at Arena de Pernambuco, the 45,440-seat stadium in neighbouring São Lourenço da Mata — a stage considerably larger than the youth sides that filled it needed, back when Camaragibe was still better known for the training pitches than for what came off them.
