Brindabella

Jason Warren-Smith had the Blues in the FFA Cup qualifying rounds in 2015, and it is that campaign people in Canberra still bring up when his name comes up. He went on managing beyond it, but that year set the marker.

Brindabella Blues began life under a different name and became Brindabella Blues Football Club in 2002. Four years later came the merger with Fyshwick Beavers Soccer Club, folding two local sides into one and giving the club the shape it plays under now. It sits within Capital Football's system, and Calwell Playing Fields, home ground since, holds around 500.

The past two seasons have been the club's best evidence of where it stands. In 2023 the Blues reached the NPL 1 Elimination Final against ANU FC, a straight knockout tie. A year later, playing a tier below in NPL 2, they went one better and reached the Grand Final, meeting Queanbeyan City SC. Moving between divisions and still finding a final in each says something about the squad's depth.

That depth owes something to Lino Fiorese, technical director since 2019, whose brief covers player development and coaching pathways rather than first-team results alone. By 2023 the club had passed 1,000 registered players, a number that marks it out less as a football team than as one of the region's larger community sporting organisations.

Not everything has run smoothly. In 2021 the club was drawn into an eligibility dispute over NPL Youth players, one serious enough to raise the threat of relegation and force a formal review. The club came through it and returned to the business of competing in NPL 1 and NPL 2, where it now looks to build on back-to-back finals appearances.
