Andrej Žakelj took over a dressing room already used to winning and kept it that way, guiding Budućnost VOLI to the domestic double in both 2023–24 and 2024–25. That kind of run is the norm rather than the exception in Podgorica: since Montenegro became independent, the club has taken the national league title eighteen times and the national cup the same number of times.

The club's basketball section traces back to 1949, growing out of the multi-sport society SD Budućnost, and its strongest period in the old Yugoslav league came at the turn of the millennium, when it won three championships in a row, in 1999, 2000 and 2001, alongside three Yugoslav Cups. The step up to regional and continental competition followed later: the ABA League title arrived in 2017–18, while further back, in 1998–99, the club reached the semi-finals of the Saporta Cup, and the following season it went as far as the EuroLeague's last 16.

Names such as Žarko Paspalj and Dejan Radonjić run through the club's history in different roles, players who left before the modern trophy count began piling up. On the court now, the team's rivalry with Partizan is billed as the Eternal Derby whenever the ABA League draw brings them together.

Home games are played in front of up to 6,000 people at the Morača Sports Center, in blue and white, the colours that give the team its nickname among the Podgorica crowd that fills the hall for them.
