The black and white came from Newcastle United; the royal blue that sits alongside it was lifted from the star on the Newcastle Brown Ale label.

Cooks Hill United were formally launched at the Commonwealth Hotel in Cooks Hill on 1 December 1997. The Cookers now play their home matches at the No. 2 Sportsground in Newcastle West, a 5,000-capacity ground that also answers to Fearnley Dawes Athletics Centre and Newcastle Athletics Field.

For most of the club's first decade the honours board stayed empty. The first line went on it in 2010, with a Grand Final win in ID1's, and from there the wins came in clusters: Zone Premier League Grand Finals in 2011 and 2012, then again in 2014.

There was a smaller afternoon in 2023 that the club will not have minded either. Nelson Bay FC were a win away from the Nelson Bay Zone 2 Reserve Grade title on their own patch; Cooks Hill beat them 4-1 in the final and took it home instead.
