Charlestown City Blues

Twice, in successive seasons, Charlestown City Blues finished top of the Northern New South Wales State League and won the grand final to go with it. The first, in 2010, went their way 3–2 against Lake Macquarie City; the second, in 2011, was settled 1–0 against Lambton Jaffas. No title has come to the club under that name since — the years that followed, once the side joined the NPL Northern NSW in 2014, passed without a trophy, the closest brush with a headline result a run to the last 32 of the FFA Cup in 2018.

The name itself did not last. In 2020 the club reverted to Charlestown Azzurri, the identity carried by one half of its lineage — Hamilton Azzurri, founded in 1963, renamed Highfields Azzurri in the 1970s and then Azzurri FC in 2006. The other half, Charlestown United, dated back to 1900. The two merged after the 2009 season to form Charlestown City Blues, and it was under that merged name that the 2010 and 2011 titles were won. The nickname Azzurri nodded to Italian heritage and to the sky-blue shirts the club wears now, in place of the maroon it once played in; supporters knew the Blues-era side simply as "the Blues."

One name on the team sheet in 2017–18 stood out from the rest: Ljubo Milicevic, capped eight times for Australia and part of the 2005 Confederations Cup squad, who had played in the A-League for Newcastle Jets, Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory. He wound down his career at Charlestown City Blues before retiring officially in July 2018.

Home games are played at Lisle Carr Oval, a small ground holding somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 depending on who is counting. The club's earlier incarnations, Highfields and Charlestown Azzurri, had already won titles in 1979, 1981, across 1992 to 1997, and in 2009 — long before United and Azzurri became one club, and long before they became two names again.
