Launceston United

Football in northern Tasmania had a name for a team called Launceston United as early as 1912, when it lined up as one of three sides in the Northern Tasmanian British Football Association. That version did not survive the Great War, and the name went out of use in 1918. It came back when a group led by chairman Harold Jackson put the club together again in the mid-1950s and opened a ground on Cypress Street. Records generally date the club from 1958.

What followed was the club's best stretch. The 1964 season brought the Northern Premiership with the reserves winning theirs as well, and three years later United took the northern title and the state premiership in the same year. Across those seasons the fixture that mattered most was against Juventus, the side now known as Launceston City — a derby with no love lost, and one Launceston City has mostly controlled.

By 1988 the club had run short of players and money, and merged with Launceston Matric. The combined side was called Launceston Soccer Club. It returned in 2008, brought back to mark half a century since the reformation.

Steve Morley coached the 1993 Northern Premier League title. The more recent silverware has come from the women's side, which won the Northern Championship in 2020 and then, in 2022, took both the Statewide Super League and the Statewide Cup.
