Mihai Popa took charge of a roster built mostly from the club's own academy. When CSU Asesoft Ploiești folded in 2015 after eleven straight national titles and a FIBA EuroCup Challenge win, the Ploiești City Hall did not try to rebuild that team but started a new one, CSM Baschet Petrolul Ploiești, from the bottom of the pyramid.

Promotion out of the second tier came within a year, in the 2015–2016 season, and the top flight followed in 2021 after another Liga I title. The senior side has yet to add a national championship or a Cupa României of its own, though it pushed as far as the Final 8 in 2023–2024. The under-18 group took a national title in 2018.

Blue, yellow and white carry over the identity of a city known as the capital of black gold. Games are played at the Olimpia Sports Hall.
