Then in 2026 the team won the Romanian championship and the Cupa României in the same season, a double the club last managed in 1969.

The basketball section traces back to 1934, when it operated under the railway workers' identity of CFR București, and the name changed hands more than once before Rapid settled for good in 1958 — Locomotiva PTT among the stops along the way. The men's team had its moment early, taking the national title in 1951, then spent the following decades knocking on the door without quite getting through: third-place finishes in the sixties and eighties, and a run to the Cupa României final in 2024 that ended against U-BT Cluj-Napoca.

It's the women who built the identity. Ten league titles between 1951 and 2026. Among the current squad, Ioana Ghizilă has become a name associated with that revival, one of the players supporters point to when the 2026 double comes up.

The derbies against Dinamo București and Steaua București carry their own weight in Romanian basketball, matches where the history between the clubs adds an edge that league position alone doesn't explain.

Home games are played in front of 1,500 people at Sala Rapid, in Giulești — a name still used for the club and its supporters, tying the basketball section to the same corner of Bucharest the railway workers built it in.
