Changlimithang Stadium

The Government of Bhutan put it up in 1974 for the crowning of the fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, with a six-row stand holding around ten thousand. Thirty-four years later, when the fifth King, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, was crowned and the monarchy turned a hundred, the six rows came out and twenty-one went in at a cost of Nu 230,000,000.

What followed came from outside. Tata Power installed the floodlights in 2011; FIFA paid for the Astroturf that replaced the grass in 2012; the Government of India funded the plastic seats fitted in 2016, which cut the counted places back to 15,000.

The seat count and the crowd have never quite agreed. When Bhutan met Sri Lanka in a World Cup qualifier on 17 March 2015, more people were inside than the ground was rated to hold. Ed Sheeran drew 23,000 here in 2025.

Before any of that, in 2002, Changlimithang staged The Other Final — Bhutan against Luxembourg, played on the day of the World Cup final and filmed for a documentary. The place has also hosted the Bhutan Premier League finals and several SAFF Championships, and it doubles as home for the men's national volleyball side.
