Rotweiss Thun Women

When a group of women in Thun wanted a handball side to call their own in 1970, they built one exclusively for that purpose, naming it plainly: DHB Rotweiss Thun, the initials standing for Damen-Handball-Club. The name has carried the club's colours, red and white, ever since, regardless of what some outside listings have claimed.

Since 1993 Rotweiss Thun has held a place in the Swiss top flight, though the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons turned into relegation fights rather than title chases. A championship has never come their way; third place is as high as the league table has treated them. The Swiss Cup has been crueller still. Three times Rotweiss Thun reached the final and three times they came away empty-handed: beaten by LK Zug in 2014–15, by LC Brühl in 2016–17, and by Spono Eagles in 2018–19, each defeat by a handful of goals.

Sibylle Peronino has outlasted all of that heartbreak, her more than 356 league appearances standing as the club record. Yvonne Leuthold's story runs a different course — she earned a place in the club's Hall of Fame. On the continental stage, Rotweiss Thun have taken part in the EHF Challenge Cup since 2014–15, once getting past Italy's ASD Ariosta P. Ferrara before falling to HC Karpaty.

Locally, the fixture that matters most is the Berner Derby against HV Herzogenbuchsee. Rotweiss Thun play their home matches in the Gotthelfhalle, a hall in Thun that holds a thousand spectators.
