Providence Bruins — Springfield Thunderbirds, AHL

Springfield Thunderbirds beat Providence Bruins 2:0 in their American Hockey League encounter on Sunday evening. The visitors opened their campaign with a clean sheet and three points, while the hosts started the season with a loss. It was a straightforward affair in the end, though not always easy to watch.

Providence sit fifth after one game, with nothing in the column to show for their efforts. Springfield sit third in the same fashion — one win, zero points recorded at this stage of the competition. The table says very little at this point in the season, but form tends to stick.

The Thunderbirds had played once before, beating Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 3:2 on Saturday. Providence lost their opener 2:1 to Utica. By then it was clear enough what kind of day we were in for — the visitors came with momentum and didn't need much to finish the job.

And here's the thing — we had Providence winning on the board, giving them sixty-one percent confidence. That prediction didn't hold up. Things came to a head early and the hosts never really got over the line. The wheels came off in a way nobody expected.

There weren't any dramatic shifts in the standings to write home about. Both teams remain where they were on paper, but Springfield now have something real to build on. Providence will need to turn it around after the break, or at least before the next game.
