FC Vaduz

Vaduz is a capital most of Europe struggles to place on a map, seat of Liechtenstein's government and princely family, and for almost a century its only football club has had to travel south into Switzerland to find opponents, because the principality itself never had room for a second professional side. FC Vaduz remains that one club, the sole professional outfit playing inside the Swiss football pyramid on Liechtenstein's behalf, which leaves it without a rival in the ordinary sense: no derby has ever taken root, only reserve-team meetings with FC Schaan and FC Ruggell, and passing competition for promotion, against Bellinzona in 2008 and Aarau in 2026.

The club was founded on 14 February 1932, spent its first season across the border in Austria's Vorarlberg association, then moved into the Swiss system in 1933 and never left. It won Liechtenstein's own national championship twice, in 1932 and 1936, before that competition folded in 1945, and has since made the Liechtenstein Cup almost exclusively its own, with 52 wins, a world record for a national cup taken by one club. Promotion to the Swiss Super League has followed four Challenge League titles, in 2002/03, 2007/08, 2013/14 and 2025/26, and the club's longest run in the top flight lasted three seasons straight, from 2014/15 to 2016/17. On 25 August 2022, beating Rapid Vienna, it became the first Liechtenstein club to reach the group stage of a European competition, the UEFA Conference League.

Home games are played at the Rheinpark Stadion, opened in 1998 and holding 7,584, where the team wears red and white and answers to the nickname Residenzler. Franz Burgmeier made more than 300 appearances across two spells in that shirt and stayed on afterwards as sporting director. It was Mario Frick, the country's best-known footballer, who took charge of Vaduz from 2018 to 2021, the first Liechtenstein-born coach the club had ever had.
