S-Kiekko

The one Suomi-sarja title S-Kiekko has to show for itself came in the 2004–2005 season, when the club, then playing under the name Seinäjoen Hockey Team, beat Heinolan Kiekko in the final. The following season the same two sides met again, and this time HeKi had the better of it, leaving S-Kiekko as runners-up. The club survived relegation battles in 2007–2008, 2008–2009, 2009–2010 and 2014–2015.

The name itself has moved. S-Kiekko was formed on 31 January 1979 out of the wreckage of two Seinäjoki clubs, Seinäjoki Salpa and Kiekko-Veljet, at a founding meeting attended by 42 people. Between 1997 and 2008 it played as SHT, with a yellow home jersey and red away kit; the reversion to S-Kiekko in 2008 came alongside a change in how the senior team was run, its operations passed to a company owned by the supporting foundation, while the juniors are looked after separately.

That junior set-up is the part of the club with the longest reach. Petri Kontiola came through it before winning a world championship and playing in the NHL for the Chicago Blackhawks. Kristian Kuusela went from S-Kiekko to a long career in Liiga, captaining Tappara.

Games against SaPKo of Savonlinna have become the closest thing S-Kiekko has to a fixture with an edge, though it is a rivalry of distance rather than history — the Seinäjoki clubs it grew from had already folded before it existed. Home games are played in front of 1,200 seats at the Jouppilanvuoren jäähalli, renovated in 2018 and known locally as the Seinäjoen Energia Areena.
