RaaheK

Every meeting with JHT Kalajoki still gets called a derby around Raahen jäähalli, the sort of fixture where league position stops mattering and the two towns simply want the points off each other. That habit of measuring itself against a neighbour rather than a table says something about a club that has spent most of its life in Finland's lower divisions and made peace with it.

Ice hockey in Raahe goes back to 1948, played under Raahen Vesa long before RaaheK existed. The current club was stitched together in 1994 out of two local sides, Kiekko-Vesa and Teräs-Kiekko, a merger done to keep a single serious ice hockey outfit in a town too small to support two. For one season, 2011–12, it even dropped the name and played as Raahen Jääkiekkoklubi before switching back the following year, as if the town had tried on a new shirt and decided it didn't fit.

The club has never lifted the Suomi-sarja title or the Finnish Cup, and its history reads instead in stayers and survivors. Markku Tiikkaja pulled on the jersey 397 times, more than anyone else who has worn it, while Joni Suominen's 328 points remain the highest scoring return in the club's Suomi-sarja years. RaaheK spent fifteen straight seasons in that third tier before finishing bottom in 2013–14 and dropping down, only to win the II-divisioona in 2017–18 and come straight back up. A handful of players who came through Raahe, among them Mikko Luovi and Jani Nurkkala, went on to play in the SM-liiga, proof the town could produce talent even when the first team could not chase trophies.

All of it still runs back to those 1948 games that gave the town its first taste of the sport, long before anyone in Raahe had reason to call a club their own.
