Vaasan Sport U20

The Vaasan Sähkö Areena holds around 6,150 for hockey, and it is where Vaasan Sport's whole structure plays, from the senior side down to the U20 squad that carries the club's colours through the junior ranks. There is no separate rink for the young side; they train and play under the same roof as the team they are being groomed to join, which is the point of the arrangement.

The U20 group competes in the U20 SM-sarja, Finland's top junior league, and its one clear mark on that competition came in the 2018–19 season, when it beat Pelicans U20 in the bronze medal match on 3 April 2019. No gold, no silver — just that single podium finish, which is still the highest the age group has reached.

The team's real measure, though, is who leaves it. Goaltender Masi Härkönen came through the Vaasan Sport junior system, including the U20 side, before making his Liiga debut in 2024 — the kind of progression the club exists to produce. Forwards and defencemen have followed similar paths out of the same dressing room, into the senior team's colours of red, black and white, a scheme that replaced the green and white the club wore when it started out.

There is no fixed rival circled on the U20 calendar, but games against Kiekko-Espoo, Kärpät and Tappara at this level come round often enough to matter, each one a test of where a given crop of players stands against the rest of the country's junior pool. Behind all of it sits the parent club, founded in 1939 as IF Sport, with the ice hockey department dating from 1962 — the root the junior side has grown from ever since, even if its own founding year was never separately marked.
