Ässät U20

Jari Kurri wore the red and black of Ässät for a single season. Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Erik Haula, Antti Raanta, Esa Lindell and Joel Armia all came up through the junior ranks in Pori before the NHL came calling.

The senior club itself was stitched together in June 1967, when Rosenlewin Urheilijat-38 and Porin Karhut merged after Karhut ran into money trouble and Rosenlew pulled its sponsorship. Ässät, known locally as Pata, went on to win the Kanada-malja three times, in 1971, 1978 and 2013. A financial crisis of its own nearly finished the club off in 2000-01, forcing a restructuring into HC Ässät Pori Oy before it could carry on.

The junior side has had to be patient for its own silverware. It took the U20 SM-sarja in 1979-80, beating Jokerit, and then went without another national junior title until 2023-24, when it beat TPS 4-2 in the final to take the Legacy Bowl.
