Cardiff Rugby — Zebre: 40:27, United Rugby Championship

Cardiff Rugby opened their United Rugby Championship campaign with a 40:27 victory over Zebre on 2 October 2026. The hosts played at home, and the result saw them start the season with four points from one game. Zebre, meanwhile, began with a loss and zero points on the board.

And here's the thing — Cardiff had lost their previous outing against Exeter Chiefs, so a win here was always going to matter. They sat deep and soaked it up in that defeat before bouncing back. By then you can see the difference in momentum, even if the table only shows one game each.

Zebre's recent record tells a story. They lost 13:47 to the Bulls on 26 September and had already fallen to the Sharks and the Bulls in May. The pattern was clear before kickoff: they were paying for a sloppy opening, and Cardiff took advantage.

We had called a home win at 71 per cent confidence. It was never going to be a mystery — Cardiff at home against a side that had lost three of their last four matches. The confidence was there, and the result confirmed it.

The final scoreline reflects the gap in form. Cardiff moved to sixth place with a win, while Zebre remained in 16th with a defeat. The table goes out of the window in these games, but the points on the board are what matter now.
