Lions moved further clear at the summit of the NPL Queensland when they took three points from Morton City Excelsior on Thursday evening. The visitors held on for a 2-0 victory that leaves them nine points ahead of their hosts with two matchdays remaining in the regular season.
Morton City Excelsior had their afternoon unravelled when a red card arrived in the thirty-second minute. They were reduced to ten men and never really found a rhythm after that, having nothing to do all evening in terms of creating anything meaningful.
Lions camped in the final third after the dismissal and finally broke through in the seventy-eighth minute. They added a second in the eighty-second to settle any nerves, and the old head settled them down rather than rushing the result.
The table backs up what the visitors have been doing all season — seventeen wins from twenty-two games puts them top by a comfortable margin. Morton City Excelsior sit third with thirty-nine points, three behind the side that beat them here.
This result means Lions extend their lead and keep pressure on whoever might challenge them. Morton City Excelsior have a difficult run-in now, having lost ground on the teams above them with this defeat.
