Valmiera made light work of Smiltene at home, winning 4-1 in the First League's Regular Season round 16 on Saturday. Valmiera struck first through M. Dembele in the tenth minute, catching Smiltene off-guard. V. Stepanovs doubled the advantage eight minutes later, and the visitors looked comfortable. M. Erglis added a third before the interval, and by then the contest had lost much of its shape. Smiltene were simply outclassed.
The second half offered little drama until R. Rams made it four in the sixty-fifth minute. Valmiera had been playing the second half a man up in spirit, if not in numbers. Smiltene refused to go away entirely, finding a consolation goal in the second minute of stoppage time. The old head settled them down after that, but not enough to change the outcome.

Smiltene occupy thirteenth place with just 10 points, 13 losses already. The result keeps Valmiera within touching distance of the leaders while Smiltene's campaign grows more precarious.
Valmiera's recent form makes this victory unsurprising. They've won three of their last five, including back-to-back clean sheets against Riga II and Skanste. Smiltene picked up a win against JEFK Ventspils on their last outing, but their record shows a side that simply cannot string results together. This was a familiar pattern.
The goal difference tells its own story. Valmiera's position is secure, their only loss coming against a top side. Smiltene's six-point gap from safety feels wider after this defeat. They'll need something extraordinary in the remaining fixtures to avoid a relegation battle that is already brewing.
