VIFK Women opened their Relegation Play-Off campaign with a emphatic 3-1 victory over YPK on Friday evening in the Kansallinen liiga. The hosts dominated from the opening whistle, racing into a commanding lead before the interval. Three goals in the first twenty minutes put any hopes of a close contest to bed early.
Minea Gronberg struck first in the ninth minute, and Cecilia Suomela added a second just two minutes later. Anida Halttunen completed the scoring before half-time with a third goal in the twentieth minute. VIFK ran the show, and YPK paid for a sloppy opening.
The visitors finally got on the scoreboard in the seventy-sixth minute when Alissa Gustafsson pulled one back. That goal came after Neea Tahtisaari had come on to replace YPK's goalkeeper. By then the match was effectively over, though the consolation goal at least meant the visitors could claim something from the evening.
YPK made three changes at half-time, bringing on M. Gustafson, Hilma Kunttu and Salli Kaijansinkko in a bid to stabilise. VIFK responded with their own substitutions, bringing on Neea Tahtisaari and later A. Hotakainen to see out the result. The hosts did not travel to make up the numbers here, and showed no intention of letting YPK back into the game.
Minea Gronberg picked up a yellow card in the eighty-sixth minute for a cynical challenge. Both sides made final changes in stoppage time, with Cecilia Suomela and Venla Isokoski coming off for YPK in the ninety-second minute. The referee blew for full time shortly after, confirming VIFK's commanding performance.
The result does little to ease VIFK's struggles at the bottom of the table. They remain in eighth place with two points from fourteen games, having failed to win a single match this season. YPK's solitary goal offers a glimmer of hope, but they too have endured a difficult campaign. This was a statement from the hosts, even if their position suggests a long season ahead.
