Avchala Stadium seats 2,500. The first began in 1977, when the team took shape as the rugby side of the Georgian Soviet Army under the name SKA Tbilisi. The Soviet structure that gave it a purpose disappeared, and so, eventually, did the team — until 2011, when it returned to the pitch as Armia Tbilisi. Players wear red and white, though camouflage jerseys turn up too.

In its first season back, Armia won the Georgian Championship, beating Ayat Kutaisi 29–22 in the final, and added the Georgia Cup the same year, then again the next. By 2013 and 2014 the club was reaching finals rather than winning them, losing both to Lelo Tbilisi.

Those two lost finals against Lelo Tbilisi set the terms for what is now the main Tbilisi derby.
