FC Winterthur

The Schützenwiese has hosted FC Winterthur on the same patch of ground since 1896. A wooden stand went up in 1922, concrete replaced it in the late 1950s, floodlights arrived in 1968, and a licensing-driven upgrade in 2012 and 2013 was followed three years later by a rebuilt east terrace and a new covered stand. No sponsor has ever put its name on it.

The club began on 10 May 1896, founded by students at the local technical college under the name FC Excelsior Winterthur; by December that year it had dropped the Excelsior and become simply FC Winterthur.

Three Swiss championships came early, in 1906, 1908 and 1917, and Winterthur has spent most of the century since shuttling around the second tier. The most recent Challenge League title, in 2022, was won under Alex Fry, the Swiss national team's all-time leading scorer, who took the club back into the Super League.

Matches against FC Zürich, known locally as the Kantonsderby, remain the fixture that matters most in the canton.

Patrick Rahmen, back in charge since October 2025, is now managing a squad captained by Remo Arnold.
