Komárno

Promotion in the spring of 2024 came with an awkward footnote: the club that had just won the Slovak Second Division did not have a ground fit to play top-flight football in. The Mestský štadión in Komárno went under reconstruction, and KFC Komárno spent its first season in the Niké Liga as a tenant, hiring the ViOn Aréna in Zlaté Moravce — a drive of some 70 kilometres from the town whose name the club carries. Home matches were played in front of crowds who had to travel to see them. The rebuilt municipal ground holds 4,408, with plans to take it to 5,000.

The club dates from 29 April 1900, when Komárno sat in the Kingdom of Hungary, on the Danube crossing that now marks the border with Hungary. That double history still runs through the place: the town is bilingual, the club's Hungarian nickname is Lilák, and the purple and white it plays in gave the name rather than the other way round.

Second-tier football supplied the rivalries that matter most. The meetings with MFK Nové Zámky, 25 kilometres up the road, go back far enough to have their own name in both languages; the fixture against FC ŠTK 1914 Šamorín carries derby status on the federation's own listing. Neither survived promotion — the Niké Liga scattered those opponents into a different division — and the club has spent its top-flight seasons looking for new ones.

Among the players who passed through, the name most often heard in Komárno belongs to Szilárd Németh, born in the town in 1977 and registered with the club's youth section from the age of seven until 1992. He left as a teenager and became a Slovakia international, a forward who finished with 22 goals for his country — still the reference point when the local youth teams are talked about.
