Ogniwo Sopot

Ogniwo Sopot has taken the Polish championship eleven times, and the run that mattered most began in 1987, when a side built by Edward Hodura turned nine titles into a stretch of dominance stretching to 2003. Hodura had joined the club in November 1976 as junior coach and built an academy that fed the first team for a generation, sending several of its graduates into the national side.

The rugby section within the wider Ogniwo Sopot sports club started on 23 June 1966, founded by Mieczysław Opieka and Zbigniew Kulenty. It lasted two seasons in the top flight before organisational trouble broke it up; Kulenty rebuilt it in 1971 with Janusz Rusinowicz and Bolesław Brzoskowski, and the senior team did not reach the Ekstraliga again until 1984, under Hodura.

Sopot lost its top-flight place in 2011, ending a 27-year stay, but came back up in 2013 and returned to the top of the table twice more, in 2019 and 2021. The ground carries Hodura's name, Stadion Miejski im. Edwarda Hodury, and holds 3,000. Matches against Lechia Gdańsk, the Derby Trójmiasta, carry the weight of a Tricity rivalry rather than a routine fixture.

The Ogniwiacy, as supporters call them, play in blue, yellow and red and go into the current season holding the 2021 title as their most recent, with the Ekstraliga place they fought two seasons to regain still to be defended.
