Lechia Gdansk

Wrzeszcz, one of the districts strung along Gdańsk's tram line north of the old town, has had one rugby club to itself since 1956, when Lechia formalised a side that Physical Education Technical School students had already been fielding informally since 1954. The club has never dropped out of the top division since it entered it in 1958, a run no other Polish rugby club can claim.

Thirteen championships back that record, spread from 1960 to 2013–14, alongside twelve Polish Cups and a run of seven straight sevens titles between 2010 and 2016.

Władysław Komar's name sits oddly on a rugby team sheet — he won Olympic shot put gold and also turned out for Lechia. Stanisław Więciorek did the rugby the conventional way, winning 65 caps for Poland and four championships with the club, and was named Player of the Year three times in the 1990s.

The club spent 65 years at the Traugutta Street ground in Aniołki, built in 1927 as the Jahnkampfbahn, before moving around 2017 to the Gdańsk Athletics and Rugby Stadium on Grunwaldzka Avenue — a shift from a stadium with a name from the interwar German city to one with no name to speak of at all. The new ground holds 936, which fits a sport that draws its derby crowds from two nearby clubs, Arka Gdynia and Ogniwo Sopot, rather than from Gdańsk's football following.
