Orkan Sochaczew

Orkan Sochaczew reached the top of Polish rugby twice, and both times the road ran through the same opponent. In the 2021/2022 final it beat MKS Ogniwo Sopot 17-16, then repeated the feat in 2023/2024, edging the same rivals 22-18. Before that first title, the closest the club had come was bronze, taken four times across three decades, most recently in the season leading into the breakthrough.

The rugby section formed in 1971, initially competing under the name Energomontaż Sochaczew before Orkan absorbed it a year later. Promotion to the top flight arrived in 1998, only for the club to drop straight back down; it took until the 2000/2001 season to re-establish itself among Poland's elite. A longer stretch outside the top division followed, ended in 2017 when Orkan beat Skra Warszawa 35-19 in a playoff final to return to the Ekstraliga — the same Skra against whom it now plays the Mazovia Derby.

Dawid Plichta has captained the side through much of this rise, a youth academy product who also holds a place in the Polish national team. Maciej Brażuk coached the club to both the 2020/2021 bronze and the 2021/2022 championship before handing the role to Tomasz Malesa.

Sevens rugby brought an earlier run of success, with national titles in 2001, 2002 and 2003, long before the fifteen-a-side team established itself at the top.
