Vestri

In 2025 Vestri beat Valur 1-0 in the final of the Iceland Cup, the Mjólkurbikarinn, and walked off with the first major trophy in the club's history. The result also opened a route into the UEFA Europa League for 2026/27 — European football for a side from a town most of Reykjavík's game had barely had reason to think about.

That town, Ísafjörður, sits in the Westfjords, in Iceland's north-west. Vestri carries no fixed rival on its fixture list and is sometimes spoken of less as a town club than as a stand-in for the whole region: Vestfirðingar, the people of the Westfjords.

The football side dates to 1986, when it began life under a different sport's name, Badmintonfélag Ísafjarðar, becoming BÍ'88 two years later and then BÍ/Bolungarvík in 2006. In January 2016, four local sports societies merged into one club, and it took the name Vestri. Two years after the football section was founded, in 1988, it already had a title to show for itself, the 3. deild karla. The next real landmark came in 2023, with the play-off win that sent the club up into the top division — and then, two years after that, the cup.

Internationals have turned out for the club along the way, among them Gabon's Mbanga Ondo brothers and Guinea's Pape Abou Cissé, proof that a side with a badminton name buried in its history has never been entirely provincial.

Djúpmenn, as Vestri are known locally, play on at Torfnesvöllur — Kerecisvöllurinn, under its sponsored name — a ground that holds 1,596.
