Szentlőrinc Edge Čakovar in Second League Thriller
Szentlőrinc claimed a 3-2 victory over Čakovar in the Hungarian Second League's fourth round on Sunday. The hosts took an early lead through two first-half goals, but Čakovar fought back to make it complicated before M. Lorentz's own goal and Z. Pesti's late strike secured the result. By then, the visitors had already seen their momentum shift.
B. Schmidtka opened the scoring in the third minute, and B. Rideg doubled the advantage just four minutes later. Čakovar responded through A. Samson in the thirteenth minute, and things came to a head when Lorentz turned the ball into his own net before half-time. The home side kept knocking on the door with their early pressure, and it told.
After the break, both managers made changes to try and find something new. Samson was replaced in the fifty-eighth minute alongside Meszaros, while Čakovar brought on Radics and Somfalvi for their own changes in the seventy-seventh. Pesti finally broke through in the seventy-fourth minute to level matters, but Szentlőrinc were left flat-footed as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.
The statistics tell an interesting story here. Čakovar dominated possession at 57 per cent and registered 86 attacks compared to 76 for the hosts. Yet Szentlőrinc were more clinical with seven shots on target from twenty-one attempts, while the visitors managed only six on target from ten shots. There is no value left at that number when you miss so many opportunities.
The result keeps Szentlőrinc in ninth place with seven points from five games, while Čakovar remain fifteenth on just three points from six matches. The hosts had lost two of their previous five league fixtures, but this win suggests something shifting. Čakovar's five defeats in six games mean they have nothing to lose going forward, but that is an assessment, not a fact. The fact is that the club sits bottom half and needs points badly.
