Antofagasta

The fixture Antofagasta cares about most is not against a club from its own city but against Cobreloa. They call it the Clásico del Norte Grande, and the pull of it owes something to geography.

The club itself was not born out of one town's ambition but out of a bureaucratic ultimatum. In 1966 the Central Football Association told two amateur sides in Antofagasta, Unión Bellavista and Portuario Atacama, that neither would be admitted to the professional ranks on its own. Merging was the only route in, and on 14 May that year they became Club de Deportes Antofagasta Portuario, with the city's mayor, Juan Floreal Recabarren, taking the presidency himself.

Two years later the new club had its first title, winning the Segunda División in a play-off round where a goal from the Paraguayan forward Juan Pelayo Ayala decided the final against San Luis. Juan Páez, who had been on the books since the merger, was still playing for the club when he moved into the manager's job in 1981. Another Segunda División crown followed in 1990, this one sealed 2-1 over Deportes Puerto Montt with Sergio Marchant captaining the side, and in 2011 came a third, this time securing promotion back to the top flight.

The Copa Chile has been kinder in frequency than in outcome: Antofagasta have reached the semi-final five times, in 1992, 1994, 1996, 2014-15 and 2017, without ever making a final.
