Atom-Kursk went into the 2025/26 season back in the Higher League "A" after failing to hold their place in the Superliga.

The team traces back to 2006, when it was formed at Kursk State Medical University under the name Medik. It then spent years carrying the names of its backers rather than its city: Polytech from 2010, then YuZGU-Atom once the South-West State University took over patronage. Only in 2023, after a vote on the Kursk Governor's official page, did the club take the name Atom-Kursk, tying its identity to the city rather than to whichever institution funded it that decade.

That same year brought the closest the club has come to a title: first place in the Higher League "A", earning promotion to the Superliga. The Superliga spell lasted one season — 14th place in 2023/24 sent them back down. Before that, Atom-Kursk built a habit of finishing just short in the second tier, taking bronze four times between 2017 and 2022.

Ekaterina Bulatova carried the club through most of that run. She joined in 2008 and stayed as captain until 2022/23, picking up all four of those bronze medals before finally winning gold with the club in the season it changed its name.
