Barnaul

Barnaul sits at the edge of the Altai Krai, a Siberian region better known for its steppe and mountains than for volleyball. VC Universitet grew out of Burevestnik, a team formed at Altai State University in 1973, before being refounded under its current name in 1997.

The colours give it away as a university side: black and yellow for the sunflower, with blue and orange worked in for the Altai sky and sea buckthorn that mark the region's identity. Home games are played at the Sports Complex "Pobeda," a hall that holds 800.

That closeness to the top flight has defined the club's record. Universitet won the Higher League "B" in 2016 and stepped up, and since then it has twice finished as runner-up in the Higher League "A", in 2017 and again in 2024.

For most of that rise, Ivan Voronkov ran the operation as head coach and director. In 2026 he stepped back into the director's role alone, handing the bench to his son, Nikita Voronkov — a change that keeps the club's direction in the same hands even as the job itself splits in two. The academy has already produced at least one departure worth noting: Filipp Voronkov left for the Super League club Fakel.
