The Vysshaya Liga A functions as the second division of the Russian volleyball pyramid. Situated directly below the Superliga and above the Vysshaya Liga B, the structure is governed by the All-Russian Volleyball Federation. The competition was reorganized into its present configuration for the 1999/2000 season, succeeding the First League and subsequent iterations of the second tier. Teams participate in a regular season followed by a playoff phase. Men’s teams advance to a Final Eight tournament, whereas women’s teams contest quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. The format ensures high-level competition across both conferences. Promotion to the top flight is rarely automatic for the champion. Typically, the runner-up engages in transition matches against the lowest-placed Superliga side, although regulations may change annually. The final position in the league table results in relegation to the Vysshaya Liga B.
