Club Guaraní

The 1960s had been the other extreme — three titles in six years, 1964, 1967 and 1969, and along the way a league record that still stands, 1,019 minutes without conceding. A first Copa Paraguay followed in 2018, won on penalties against Olimpia after a 2-2 draw.

The club was founded on 12 October 1903 in Asunción, named for the Guaraní people, and its black and yellow came from the Meliá brothers, who borrowed the colours from Uruguay's Peñarol and the emblem from the English privateer Francis Drake. Only two other clubs in the capital, Olimpia and Cerro Porteño, share Guaraní's record of never dropping into Paraguay's second division. Among those who wore the shirt, José Luis Chilavert kept goal in 1984 before the Ballon d'Or career that followed elsewhere, and Salvador Cabañas, on loan in 1999, returned in spirit as the club's record scorer in the modern era and South American Footballer of the Year in 2007.

Home games were played at the Estadio Rogelio Silvino Livieres, 5,380 seats, demolished in 2024-2025 to make way for a ground of around 16,000. None of that history matches Olimpia for weight. The Clásico Añejo between the two sides is the oldest derby in Paraguayan football, running well past its 120th year, and Guaraní has met its neighbour in both of its modern cup finals — 2010 and 2018.
