Deportivo Recoleta

Recoleta's clearest mark on Paraguayan football is not a cup on a shelf but a climb repeated twice. The club won the Division Intermedia, the second tier, in 2001 and again in 2024, and each time the promotion followed a fall rather than a rise from nowhere. The first spell in the Division Profesional, in 2002, ended in immediate relegation, and by 2004 Recoleta had dropped all the way to the fourth division. Getting back took the better part of two decades: champions of the Primera C in 2015, champions of the Primera B in 2022, and champions of the Intermedia once more in 2024, which returned the club to the top flight for only the second time in its history.

The team was formed on 12 February 1931, when two sides from the Recoleta district of Asunción, 2 de Julio and Unión Pacífico, merged and took the neighbourhood's name. Its ground, Estadio Roque Battilana, holds 6,000 and stands next to the Cementerio de la Recoleta, a neighbour close enough that it earned the club an older nickname, Los Funebreros, the Undertakers. The name that has stuck in the press since is milder: Los Canarios, for the yellow shirts worn at home, with black kept for away games.

Back among the elite, Recoleta finished sixth in the 2025 Division Profesional, a placing that sent the club into continental competition for the first time. The Copa Sudamericana run reached the round of 16 in 2026, where the draw paired them with Boca Juniors.

Recoleta has never fielded a graduate of its own academy; every name of note arrived from elsewhere. Among them is Marcelo Cañete, who joined in 2026 after his time at Boca Juniors — the club he now finds himself facing on the biggest stage Recoleta has reached.
