The ground sits a few streets from the Riachuelo, wedged into the grid of La Boca, the dockside barrio where immigrants from Genoa settled at the turn of the twentieth century. Estadio Alberto José Armando — La Bombonera to everyone who has stood inside it — holds 58,305 under the 2024 CONMEBOL count, a number fixed less by ambition than by how tightly the surrounding streets close in. Club Atlético Boca Juniors formed in that same district on 3 April 1905, and the nickname that followed, Xeneizes, Genoese, has never really left.

Six Copa Libertadores sit in the trophy room, the first won in 1977, the last in 2007, with three Intercontinental Cups won across that same stretch. The domestic championship record runs from 1919 to 2022, 34 titles in total.

Federal intervention took over the club's finances in 1984, and by 1995 Boca were close to bankruptcy. That was the year Mauricio Macri became president, rebuilt the books, opened the academy, and hired Carlos Bianchi, under whom Boca took four domestic titles, three Copa Libertadores and two Intercontinental Cups inside five years. Martín Palermo scored through most of that period and retired as the club's all-time top scorer with 236 goals; Roberto Mouzo still holds the appearance record, 426. Daniel Angelici's presidency, from 2011 to 2019, was dogged by financial scandal instead; Juan Román Riquelme, once the team's playmaker, has run the club as president since December 2023, through a spell of boardroom instability rather than silverware.

Against River Plate — the Superclásico — the head-to-head reads 94 wins to 85, with 88 drawn.
