Podbrezová

Podbrezová have spent more time in the top flight than out of it in recent years, yet 4-11-2022-23 remains the club's high-water mark in Niké liga: fourth place. Before that, three runner-up finishes in the top division — 2007-08, 2011-12, 2012-13 — sit as the closest the small town ever came to a title.

The club started in 1920 as RTJ Podbrezová, took the name ŠK Podbrezová after merging with Tatran Horná Lehota in 1930, absorbed FK Brezno in 2006, and settled on FK Železiarne Podbrezová in 2017. Železiarne Podbrezová, a.s., the steelworks, remains the club's identity as much as its sponsor.

Juraj Kucka left the biggest mark of anyone to come through the academy, starting his career there between 2004 and 2007 before going on to 112 caps for Slovakia. Roland Gaľčik holds the club's all-time scoring record with 50 goals, while Blažej Vaščák tops the list for Niké liga goals alone with 22. Among the current owners is Stanislav Lobotka, and the club runs an Inter Campus partnership with Inter Milan, bringing a touch of Serie A into a town better known for steel than football.

Home games are played at the ZELPO Aréna, holding 4,000, with the team turned out in green shirts and shorts and yellow socks. None of it carries the weight of the Stredoslovenské derby against MFK Dukla Banská Bystrica — the fixture that decides bragging rights across central Slovakia, and the one Podbrezová fans circle before any other on the calendar.
