Anderlecht and Lyon met at Lotto Park on Wednesday evening in the opening League Stage match of the UEFA Europa League, with the visitors claiming a 2-1 victory. The result moves Lyon into fourth place on three points while Anderlecht remain winless in their first outing.
Nartey opened the scoring in the eighth minute, giving Lyon an early advantage at home. Nakamura doubled the lead before half-time with a second goal in the 22nd minute. Cvetkovic pulled one back for Anderlecht in the 61st minute, but the hosts could not find an equaliser.
Both Lyon players received yellow cards — Niakhate in the 26th minute and Ouedraogo in the 44th — before a flurry of substitutions at the break. Anderlecht made four changes around the hour mark, including bringing on Openda, while Lyon responded with three moves in the 74th minute. The final substitution came in stoppage time when Augustinsson was replaced.
Anderlecht dominated possession at 58 per cent and created more chances, registering four big opportunities against Lyon's one. They took 10 shots on target to the visitors' five, yet their expected goals of 1.35 contrasted sharply with the 1.63 expected assists they produced. Lyon were more clinical, converting 77 per cent of their shots on target compared to Anderlecht's 36 per cent accuracy.
For Lyon, the win puts them at the top of the standings after just one match. Anderlecht will need to regroup quickly, sitting 31st with nothing to show from their opening game. By then, the gap between the two sides in the table will feel wider than one result suggests.
