Twente beat PSV 3-2 in the Eredivisie's seventh round at the Grotsch Weste on Sunday. The hosts took the lead through Younes Taha El Idrissi before Guus Til added two, but Wout Weghorst and Daouda Weidmann dragged the visitors back. The result leaves both sides level on 16 points after seven games, Twente fourth and PSV third.
Twente went ahead in the 14th minute when Taha El Idrissi finished a move down the left. Til doubled the advantage shortly after, tapping in from close range in the 26th minute, and then struck again three minutes later to put the hosts 3-0 up. PSV had already made a change before that, bringing on Ricardo Pepi in the 10th minute, but the substitution made little impact on the scoreline.
Weghorst pulled one back for PSV in the 79th minute after a yellow card in the 43rd minute. Weidmann restored Twente's two-goal cushion in the 83rd minute, and the visitors had no answer. Ruben van Bommel, yellow-carded in the 60th minute, was substituted in the 75th minute, while PSV made three further changes between the 76th and 87th minutes.
Twente dominated the numbers. They completed 277 of 358 passes and held 40 per cent possession, while PSV managed 464 of 532 with 60 per cent. Twente registered 14 shots inside the penalty area and 7 outside, compared with PSV's 8 and 3. Expected goals favoured the hosts 2.4 to 1.02, and Twente created two big chances against PSV's three.
The win keeps Twente within striking distance of the top four. Both sides have won five, drawn once and lost once, but Twente's three-goal margin over PSV in this head-to-head gives them the edge on goal difference. The hosts have not lost since their opening defeat and now sit one place above their visitors.
